Operation and Kennel Technician
SUMMARY:
The public works operation and kennel technician splits their time in working in grounds, facilities, parks, and has responsibility for maintenance of our animal kennels. In public work, you would work with a team while working independently at the shelter. You must like dogs and not mind working outside.
DUTIES AND RESPONSBILITIES:
Here are some of the duties. Pls know that the animal facility will not always have animals present.
· Assist with construction, maintenance, and repairs by loading/unloading heavy materials, operating various vehicles (trucks, tractors, mowers), and performing routine inspections and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment.
· Maintain and clean shelter facilities, including flushing kennels and waste chutes, and disinfecting floors using appropriate cleaning agents to prevent bacteria and germs.
· Perform general upkeep of shelter grounds by mowing, maintaining playgrounds, and ensuring recreation areas are free of debris and hazards.
· When present, help care for animals, including refilling water buckets, feeding, and offering treats when available. Ensure towels and blankets are checked and replaced as needed.
· Monitor and regulate temperatures within the shelter using AC, heaters, fans, or heating lamps, and adjust roll-up/roll-down doors to ensure proper airflow.
· Assist with maintaining public works systems by performing repairs to water and sewer lines, streets, and storm drainage systems.
· Handle occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds and may be required to work overtime or on weekends/holidays as needed.
· Report any supply shortages, including cleaning materials, towels, or blankets, to the supervisor and assist with laundering as necessary.
· Support the care of animals by ensuring a clean, safe, and comfortable environment for their medical, physical, and emotional well-being, preparing them for adoption.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
· Graduation from high school or GED equivalent.
· Possession and maintenance of valid Texas Class A (minimum) driver’s license at time of employment.
· Good working knowledge of how to operate equipment, facilities, materials, methods, and procedures used in maintenance, construction, and repair activities.
· Instructions and directions verbally and in writing using the English language.
· Must get along with others, including dogs.
· May be subject to criminal background history screen and pre-employment drug screen
